In 1886, David H. McConnell founded the California Perfume Company, which would become Avon, in New York City. As an unsuccessful book salesman, he had come up with a rose-scented perfume as a "gift" to encourage women to buy his books. The perfume was so popular, that McConnell decided to abandon the book business and start a perfume company instead.
Mrs P.F.E. Albee became the first to join Avon as a representative. Mrs Albee sold perfumes door-to-door and recruited other ladies to sell the perfume who were paid on the number of fragrances they sold. It was a radical business model in 1886,
